ok guys yesterday i finally started messin with the imperial again, i got it cranked, the carb floods real bad if you don't keep the pedal down, so i'm gonna get a new carb being as that one is still under warranty  ;D probably a rochester 2bbl it's smokin out of a couple of the tubes, but that's probably from sitting all this time i hacked off the old bumper, and i'm gonna put a 74-75 duster/dart bumper on the front of it, it's a pretty stout bumper it's a shock-type, weighs about 100lbs, it has a steel innner bumper under it, and i wanna see how tuff these are because i got about 4 of em laying around here on some of these cars i'm gonna fix my floorpans and trunkpans, what do yall think about putting a new rear bumper on it, and straightening out the sheetmetal from where it's bent before all nice and neat you know how on the boxcars the rear bumper folds in with the trunkdeck around the frame should i fix it so it's kinda like a fresh rear, or leave it being as it's seasoned metal now?? |

fix as much sheet metal as u can. change the bumper definatly if u think u will get threw tech w/ it. i did some sheet metal work w/ my car from this past year and the rear is almost completely finished and ready for a derby. i can post them if somebody wants me to.

well the motor mounts broke in the derby, i traded the m/t for a freshly rebuilt th350 tranny. the m/t is a pontiac, so i dont think i came out to bad. i will just unhook the tranny mount bring it out, drop the other one in, tack weld it, haul it out then reweld the mounts then run her. lol.

found me a pointy bumper i'm gonna put on it, i'm just gonna run 2 pieces of althread on each side so incase they say i can't run it i can have a regular bumper with me, is the pointy bumper gonna be too hard on my frame??? which part of it do i hit with? is it the ends or the middle you use dead on?

Chris, The front bumper stuff, and the new carb sound good. I've never used a pointy bumper, so what Matt says, sounds good. I know Jake from Idaho welded one on the 64 he was building, but couldn't run. You might get ahold of him, and see how that went. As for the rear, from what I remember of the pictures, it looked pretty good. I wouldn't change the bumper on that. If it needs some welding, that's fine. But I think putting a different rear bumper on, won't let the trunk roll right. I could be wrong, but of all the box Imps I've run/ seen, the stock rear bumper works just fine. You could maybe work the trunk metal a bit, to help it in folding more. Once you get the trunk folding right, it'll turn into a monster of a battering ram!

so leave the rear bumper alone right steve, each side is packin in around the frame, and the frame is stickin out there like a helluva battering ram
would a flat bumper or a pointy bumper be best?

i would use the flat bumper, if u need some help mounting it i have a few ideas. i would take a 3/8" piece of flat metal and put it on the inside of the Y w/ a hole in it to where the shock bolt slides inside that hole. on 2 sides of the plate weld some sleves that can fit some BIG grade 8 bolts. these bolts will go threw one side of the frame threw the sleve and then back out the otherside. these 2 bolts will hold the shock inplace if the shock isnt longenough to go all the way out the back of the Y. u will have to line it up right to where the bumper shock is touching the front of the Y so u can weld it solid up there. if u cant understand what im saying just say so and i will try to find some pics that help out on this.

Chris, I forgot, that you had some body rust. Can you post the pictures of the rear again? But yes, I would still leave the back bumper on.

nice newport and roundy, there's also a 65-66 or so newport/new yorker behind the roundy

yea, well the ones i made are bop style and will bolt to the frame. the type of shock holder i was talking about for u was like this. the square tubing will be swaped out for the inside of the Y frame. then take the incert that i have welded on the inside of the square tubing and weld 2 round hollow pieces of metal on 2 of the sides. instead of welding the plate to the frame which u wont get away w/ u will take bolts and bolt them threw the frame threw the hollow pieces of metal that u welded on the sides of the incert. the bolts will hold the back of the shock. i dont think that u can get away w/ the bop brackets that i made above unless it was on a non imperial. i dont think u should have a problem w/ it on any other car, just as long as u bolt it to the frame and not weld u should be ok, i am selling them for 65$ a pair pluss shipping. they weigh 20lbs together. when i make them i weld the angle iron first then put the incert on the shock and put the square tubing over it until it fits perfectly and then tack weld it inplace on the inside. then pull the shock out and weld her solid.

all the other Y framers i have seen that puts the bumper way back. im one of thoes ppl that likes the bumper to take the most stress and like it sticking out there. aslong as u dont get hit on the corner or have a bumper that will give a little on the corner u should be fine.

took pics won't download to my picturetrail, who can i send em to? i might've found me a whole frontclip for it figured if i get the frontclip next derby i'll hardnose it all night, so then i still have a good rear, and then reclip the front for the next run

link won't work, but it's a fronclip, frame, sheetmetal got it off ebay for $41.77 figured next derby i'll just hardnose it, trash that frontend, so i still have a good rear, and then reclip it for the next run
