i agree with chryslerfat synthetic is the best hands down, the reason being is its cleaned of all other additives in the oil witch cause the oil to breakdown, under heat ,by far synthetic is the best , but if u cant run it because of budget reasons the next best thing is kendal gt sae 50 or 20w 50 because it is cleaned more than any other commercial oil out there atleast this is what i found out after researching hope this helps 753 ;D

20w50 with lucas mine gets changed after every other derby or how hard I run it. The most longest I have ran without changeing has been 3 derbys

I use Royal Purple 5w 30 fully synthetic racing oil. Very expensive though $77.00 a case. I also run it in my truck. They make all oils for every type of racing you can imagine. Check them out at rpmoil.com.

Figure how much you would spend on oil first before you say no then figure that the synthetic is good for at least 1 year of running. It will probably come close to the same.

gonna switch to royal purple next year, it's around 7.00 a quart, either that or mobil 1 it's about 6.00 a quart, i know the mobil 1 is good stuff i sell enough of the crap, plus i get 20% off the 6.00 a quart, so it aint too bad, that and i use a k&n oil filter, but if you think about it, what's a few more dollars if that's the difference between spending a little more money now, and your engine last, than having to buy another engine later on, and lose the derby and another thing, don't use the store brand oil filters, puralator oil filters or fram extra guard them things are junk, the fram extra guard will suck shut when in high stress conditions "i only use the extra guard in regular driving conditions", and the others don't filter even half the dirt. i see it everyday at my jobplace, when getting an oil filter get either a wix, fram tough guard, (not fram extra guard "junk") or if you feel like spending a few extra dollars get a k&n oil filter they filter out 99.9% of all dirt, and get one of those magnetic sleeves that go on the outside of the oil filter, that will keep all the metal shavings out the engine, and keep them from shredding your filter. and trust me metal shavings do get in the oil, from friction, or from that crappy so-called gasoline they sell these days.

Another thing you want to look at, is using a shorter filter on Mopar big blocks. The standard one sticks out, and could get hit real easy. I can't think of the number of the shorter filter, but it's not hard to find out. The little less oil you'll have, won't hurt as much, as not having any oil at all. You might look at the same thing, for other cars.

That Royal Purple oil is on sale now ($68.00 a case), plus they offer free shipping through UPS. It might be worth it, if your engine is worth it. You shouldnt need to change your oil after every derby, or even every other derby, should be good for atleast 4 derbys depending on how hard you run it and how far you get in the derby, and many other variables (radiator etc.)

i have just gone into advanced auto pickup a couple jugs of there brand of oil and about 4 quarts of lucas additive and pour 2 of them into the engion and 1 or 2 into the tranny.

Synthetic will go at least 4 times as long without breakdown. Although it is not recommended for fresh engines.

matt make sure u use the lucas oil stabilizer for ur oil, and the tranny additive for the tranny, the advance brand is made by the same company that makes havoline, i work for the company, but i won't run the advance brand oil no more, i used it ONCE put 2 heats on it, drove it elsewhere probably about 15 miles worth of driving, and i drained it, and it was as thing as water, that stuff breaks down fast, and that's with a bottle of lucas in it

i run synthetic oil in my derby car ..but thats all i run that oil in.. .one thing wrong said in here was petroleum base oil does not wear out..no it can break down from heat , but anyoil can from that... what i like about synthetic is under extreme heat it does lubricate better ...(starting when hot).. i run 20 w 50 syn ... oil ..and do not add any additive to my oil... the first # of the oil is the true wieght of the oil ..and modifiers bring it up to the second # with increasing of heat ... (wow i cant believe i remember all that...maybe i wasnt sleeping)

hey chris, i always look at the bottle and make sure its rated for trannys. i will run tranny fluid and oil for about 1 or 2 derbys on the engion then will empty and renu both fluid levels. i just buy 2 quarts of the 2 diffrent types of lucas additive. i will put 1-2 in both the tranny and engion fluids. are u saying im doing something wrong or do u have some good info i may use. if i can do something more effeciently in what i just typed, please point it out.

ok, on the shelf when i go to pick the lucas additive up. there is 2 diffrent types one is like 2-4$ a bottle, and the other one is about 7$ a bottle. i get 2 of each and put 2 in the engion oil and 2 in the tranny fluid. the tranny fluid is tractor/truck raded that comes in huge jugs (oh god did i say that) and the oil is 20w50 advanced auto brand.

according too HR mag. oil isnt the prob. its the impurites in the oil that cause the oil to break down from not being screened of these inpurities atleast thats what they said in a title that said synthetic is it really worth it 753 ;D

i've heard synthetic oil was for newer engines, and is it true that if you use synthetic oil once that you have to use it from then on

I think you wouldn't want to use it, on real old engines. But one with a fresh one, or fairley fresh, it shouldn't be a waste of money. But with a engine over 100,000 on it, I'd just use regular oil. But that's me.LOL
