the best mopar rearend is the 8 3/4. i dont know what yrs cars came w/ them, but im pretty sure the imps, 60s newports, newyorkers had them.

Dont run the early rear with the keyway hubs if you have any power they will shear.

Ok,,,there are 3 types of 8 3/4 diffy center sections . The 741,742,488/489 . Now then the 741 has a 1 3/8" pinion shaft . The 742 has an 1 3/4" pinion shaft. The 488/489 has a 1 7/8" . These different pinion sizes are not interchangible . The cases are . They all have a 30 spline axle . The drag racers like the 488/489 cases for their strength . However in our circumstance the 742 best suits us . Gear selection is good for the 742 or the 488/489 . The 488/489 gears are higher price though . All 8 3/4 center sections are interchangible too. Even with the keyed hub version .

Btw , since we're on the subject . Alot of people think that 1 either just throw the gears in and run them and it's fine . Well it isn't .
The other thing is that people think they have to have it professionally installed too. You don't .
I do all my gear installations . I do it by feel too . I know what I want to achieve . and that's what I set my backlash at .
Now then . No matter what rearend you have , everyone has to be "preloaded" . If you don't preload then chances are you'll mess up a good set of gears . Also you'll split your case too.
Pay attention to what gears you get too ! Most of the time alot of gears will interchange, if, you use them in a same type case they came out of . For example : if you grab a set of gears off ebay . The seller tells you that they are out of a bolt in axle type case . Now they will fit into a "C" clip rearend , but not correctly . If they are intended for bolt in axle diffy then stay with that .

You have any pics that clear of one with a spool or that has the lincoln locker option? Would be great to show what should be welded and what the difference between a spool and a stock posi unit are. Thanks. BTW good work guys. This thread is staying on topic and the information so far is all usable stuff.

Shorty-
You are the MAN!
Which of these 8 3/4 rear end types are you trying to set me up with?
What do you guys think about a Pacer with 8 3/4 rear and 4.89 gears?

Samething Arnie , but the difference is mine is a 489 case , 8 3/4 . Btw , just happens to be the strongest offered by mopar.

But if your asking about the gear in the pic , I'd guess a 5:38.

yeah iwas trying to name the gear by looking at ring gear width and what i could see of the pinion.

Btw , rick , this might help both of us figure out what gear it is . I turned it side ways , lol. Now then with that said , I have to say that this was taken from ebay . This was setup that I was bidding on . I just wanted the spool on this diffy , nothing more . I also know this . The size of that gear is does not fit that case . I also know that 741 cases won't support that thick of the gear .

Shorty, I have a 8 3/4 rear out of a 73 imp that turned both tires when I hammered it down... no doubt about it, it was a two wheel peel... I pulled out the 3rd member to night and it looks like and Open Diff... whats the deal? what would make it spin two wheels? I kinda need to find out I have a buyer and I don't want to sell him a S.G if it is not what it is...

Jake , I looked at the link you got on the IDDA . That's definately an open diffy . It's simular to the 1 that I had . I always called it a power lock, it's really an open diffy, it's no sure grip , and he's not going to be hurt by it .

|
Post by idahoimpkiller on Mar 2, 2006 9:07:17 GMT -5
what is a power lock? and what do you mean by he's not going to be hurt by it? the guy wants to put it in a Road Runner and he wanted to make sure it was 3.91 gears any less then he didn't want it.... How should I explain it to him?

then tell him the truth ! Tell him it an open diffy , that's limited slip . I had 1 in a 67 Fury III . That thing would lay dual marks at anytime I wanted . And as for the gear , hey ho , it's all good too .

Jake, I'm not real good at this gear stuff. But I believe, a power-lock, is a special set-up, that when you put the hammer down, it spins the rear, and a pin comes out to engage both axels. Or, it's one where you flip a switch, and a soenoid engages a pin, for both axels.

No they aren't matt . The 8 3/4 is a bolt in axle , and If I can get slam to post it the 71/4 is a bolt in axle . Otherwise all the others are that I know of .

Post by Shorty Thompson on Mar 5, 2006 9:19:39 GMT -5
What,,,,,,? the 8 3/4 ? Well you can break any diffy . It's just that some break easier that others . Take a "C" clip for example . One good shot to the wheel and you pop the button off on it , then your axle just rolls on out . B I A 's won't . Now then they are better axle grades too as far as the bolt in 8 3/4 axles goes as well . For example the 5 on 5 imp diffy is a better axle thatn the New Yorker stock axle . However ,,,,,,before you go looking into swapping out axles you need to look/check the lengths first .
