Chris, By tuffest, I guess you mean heat. So I'll pick a Ford 292/312 block. Oh, and you need to vote too.

I've been running small block Chevys for 21 years and they're unbeatable for overall performance, reliability, power, ability to take the heat, cheap parts that are available everywhere, and a Monkey could make it run great . I've run against some good running Mopars, but you just have to run them around a while untill the transmission gets hot and quits. GM made the total package. 350 2BBL/Turbo 400 in a 73 impala wagon built well (no cheating, that makes them bend funny)and driven better is unstoppable. Someone will say 64-66 Imperials but without a Chevy bumper or drivetrain they're just a big Newport with an extra thousand pounds on that 727! I Hope I hit the bee's nest with a big stick!

yeah if u went to the 6 cylinders i would go with the 225 slant six, and ford 300. couldn't agree more on that one, the 225 slant 6 is unbeatable....I used to have a 75 Dodge D-100 full sicze pickup with a 3 on the tree. I was going to a derby with it pulling my trailer with my car on it and it started knocking, and all of a sudden I heard a clank and there was ALOT of smoke, so I pulled over. I turned the key off and it had pre ignition and finally shut off and a klank sound again, the sound of metal falling against the pavement. I opened the hood and upon further inspection found a softball sized hole in the side of the block and on the ground underneith a small puddle of oil and a U-shaped piece of metal (was actually a connecting rod) Believe it or not, it started right up after I stuffed a rag in the hole to keep the oil in the motor somewhat and I drove another 5 miles to my buddies place where we dropped the trailer and started yankin the motor.

i've heard of people trying to tear the slant six's up on purpose, and never succeed. i know of a guy here a while back ran one for 3 days with no oil until it finally locked up

the slant six . totally indestructable. i drove a '61 belvedere 2 days with a broken connecting rod and it didn't die. hammered like he!! but kept on running until i parked it. thought about running it like that in a derby but didn't do it.

I donated a 57 Chrysler, to the local PBS stations auction. It was a two door, with the slant 6 in it. The only thing I did, was put a new dist. gear on the end. The guy who won the car, had a blast with it. He was hitting with the front and rear. The radiator went after the third front hit. Ran the rest of heat, and transferred to main. We didn't have time, to replace the radiator. Out of a 15 car main, he was about 5th. And the engine never stopped. It got HOT! The tranny let go. But the engine was still running.

Thats funny cause when I ran at the dragstrip a loose motor was better I did fresh builds with 8thousands between the bore and the piston. They rev up really fast when they are loose.

ill agree with the loose set up in derby but if u want it loose just rebuild it loose and build a decent motor, we had a 350 with a 557 gear and our buddy had a 355 with a 488 gear would push us backward with little prob. like to have the best of both worlds is all if possible with ure budget anyway 753 ;D
