I use a lap belt only. The why is mobility, no whip lash in the morning, and easy to get out of in a hurry. Plus added bonus they are supplied in the back seat of about every car made.

I like to just use a lap belt. But where we derby, you need a sholder harness. I leave the sholder belt real loose, and run it behind my back. I don't like trying to pull against the belt, as I turn around. If you're straning to much, when hit, you could hurt yourself more. As for the 5-point set-up, if you are going to drive a "hammer head" type car, and only use the front, that might work. But you want to make sure, it has a quick release, for all belts at one time.

I run lap and shoulder belts but I get in the car adjust the shoulder belt out about 5 to 6 inches then duct tape it at the top no way for it to retrack. Stays loose but helps so your head doesn't bounce off the steering wheel.

Stays loose but helps so your head doesn't bounce off the steering wheel. we do this too but instead of the tape we just heat a bolt up an burn it threw the belt strap itself an put a nut at the end.

Lap belt only, faster on the way out. But keep hands (fingers) at sides of steering wheel cuz helmets are hard on the fingers. Also wear a full faced helmet cuz steering wheels taste bad. LOL!!!

its too hard to look behind you in a 5 point. heck. ive had my lap belt break halfway through a run, and i just unhook it and wing it anyways. im sure everyone has done that at least once!

I would never run more than a lap belt. Think about it if you stop the body from moving the head moves violently ie: hans device. I have had convos with other drivers (slam shifter) and the conclusion is the same.

i run a 4 point with my left belt either real loose or completely off, and i can just about turn completely around, i don't trust a stock seatbelt, i don't want to end up with a broken neck, bad back, or eat the steering wheel. it has one hook on it, you pull it, and you're out the car, all racing harnesses are easy to get out of, well just about all of the newer ones. i've seen guys run with stock belts before, and somehow this black imperial, comes up, and booyah!!! they are laying down in the passenger side floorboard.

I just use a lap belt out of the backseat of the car. On my first car, the bolt pulled out of the floor and I was loose the rest of the heat. Wooboy, what a ride. A friend of mine uses a four point with the left shoulder belt loose, It has a ratchet release mechanism, he puts a small cable tie around the release lever to keep it from opening accidentally.

I always use the standard shoulder/lap belt, but I pull the shoulder belt out, to a comfortable distance from my body, (say, about 5-6 inches) then I wrap duct tape around it, at the loop (attached to the roof, where the shoulder belt goes through) so it can't get any looser, or tighter. (You have to make sure the 2 parts of the belt are taped together, not just taping the one side, up at the loop, otherwise it defeats the purpose.) I ALSO use a neck brace. (Simpson racing neck brace, I believe. I think it cost about $30.00, but it was WELL worth the minor expense!) That way, when I take a hit, the belt doesn't tighten too much, where I can't turn around, but it keeps me from hitting the steering wheel, too! The neck brace prevents the whiplash effect. The couple of times I DIDN'T wear a neck brace, I got really sore, for several days after. On the other hand, on the couple of times I didn't duct tape the belt together, it tightened up on me, and I couldn't turn around, or even breathe! But, with the belt taped like that, I had no problem turning around, and I didn't worry about hitting the steering wheel, either. My husband has ran with only the lap belt, a couple of times, and got a badly bruised sternum, because of it. He still doesn't want to listen, though. lol The dummy REFUSES to use the neck brace, even though his neck ends up in terrible pain, for 2 or 3 weeks! Sometimes, even MONTHS! The worst I've gotten, is a small bruise on my shoulder, from an especially hard hit, where I was SLAMMED into the shoulder harness! Damn, that was a good hit! ;D Anyway, that's been my experience with seatbelts. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have a heavy duty utility knife (AKA boxcutter) duct taped to the seat, within easy reach, just in case you happen to catch fire, and if the belt happens to jam, and you can't get it to unlock. Another thing I think we're going to start doing is putting a small fire extinguisher in the car. Ya never know! Ok, that's my 2 cents. Stay safe! Amy

I like a 5 point in the drag car but not in a derby car , can't turn around but i do use the duct tape method so i don't get locked back into the seat .

lap belt only for me....I'm also in the full face helmet group
I like the freedom of movement the lap only allows.

I like the GM 71-73 seatbelts and shoulder harness that are seperate and non-retracting. I always tie a piece of wire around the belt where the retractors are because on a wet, muddy night I got a close representation of a sucker bite where my shoulder belt was.( wife wasn't at that derby, try to explain that one!). Only ran one time beltless and let me tell you, when you're hitting Imperials with a southern wagon there's alot of movement

if u use a harness, wear the left side strap either real lose or completely off, i do that, and i can just about turn completely around, i have no problems with it, and most of the cars i've ran didn't have seatbelts when i got em, or they were just rotted, or the latches were old and rusted.
